Environmentalists

A little jewel from the internet:

5 Ways People Are Trying to Save the World (That Don’t Work)

It seems there are a lot of misconceptions about the environment. People tend to think that we need to actively fight environmental change instead of simply correcting our way of doing things… and it turns out that fighting only makes matters worse.

Cooling your computer

by Tim Faircloth on Feb 2, 2009, 11:56 am

All computer geeks know that one of the most important parts of your computer is the cooling system. Few, however, get to see the true effects of heat buildup in a system… well, not unless you’ve had your CPU or video card fan go out. Here’s a little youtube video for the unenlightened:

Why cooling is important

The first time I watched this video, I was astonished at how quickly a CPU will die when the cooling system fails. Seconds after the heatsink is removed, bad things start happening.

So there are several reasons to make sure your cooling system works in your computer:

  • Computer components generate heat, and if they generate enough, they melt and burn.
  • Since electrical resistance increases with temperature, your components work much better when they are properly cooled.
  • If you don’t cool your components, you may inadvertently release the magic smoke within them that makes them work properly.
